Syawal 1438h

...and just like that we've reached the end of Syawal. as I grew older, I realised how I just wanted to get the visiting/hosting over and done with more than I wanted to make plans with my friends/relatives. I suppose that's how our hectic lifestyles have nurtured us to be. I'm glad that this month is coming to an end. despite me not actively making plans to go visiting with the people I love/know/am close to – I still thoroughly enjoyed the festivities.

on the first day, I was apprehensive to meet my relatives again. but after the small talk, shared laughter, poses, songs, and food – I warmed up a little. as I've written before, I wanted to change my diet to a pescatarian one. that didn't go too smoothly, because I was served food with meat. I didn't refuse it, but I did do a good job avoiding other meat options that weren't fish.

towards the end of the day, our family got to know that my maternal cousins would be visiting our place. despite our weariness, we pulled through and made sure that our place was tidy and that the food we served was prepped.

I did, however lapse back into a state of sadness when I found out the truth behind certain people on the first night of Syawal. they were people I looked up to, and to know they had made certain choices affected me. I had to let go, of course. I slept with such unease and misery, but woke up feeling a little lighter with the remnants of sorrow left in my heart.

but that's life.

I've had to make tough decisions based on how the people around me made me feel, so I don't have to question their actions. there are many times when I've missed a certain distant friend, but I can't really do much about it because of our past/history.

"Even in those darkest moments where you feel the most alone, you have to remember that the people who left you, left you for a reason. Sure, some people get back together after a period of separation, and sometimes they end up happier than ever. But every time you miss something about that person/those people, think about two things you hated. If the things you hated add up to more than the things you likes, it's time to let go."

and let go I did.

my mother recently told my sister, "when something/someone is taken away from you, Allah will replace it with something/someone better."

countless of times that statement had proved itself to be true in my timeline.

so, I'm grateful.

our second day of Syawal was good. I was exhausted, but I kept pushing on. I let myself enjoy the sweeter moments of our day, while holding onto the conversations that struck out to me. as promised (to myself), I started a Syawal journal. it was the same journal I started using back during the CNY period. back then, I had insta-storied several of my doodles/comics and tagged my cousins. they found it hilarious, of course, knowing me and my antics when it came to capturing our relationship.

I wrote out what felt important, and I'm glad that I did.

when our family left one of the houses earlier so that we could go back to our place to continue getting ready, my older sister and I took the opportunity to take our OOTD shots. looking back at those photos now, I can see how worried I looked.

goodness.

our cousins came over, and I grabbed the chance to take photo booth shots on my macbook (thank you boyfriend. once again, you've proved yourself worthy. I usually use my mac for candid shots – as seen on my first day and twelfth day post on instagram.).

other key events that occurred during Syawal were:

1. Masjid Darul Makmur Perjumpaan Raya

it was a gathering for all the teachers to bond. we met new staff members, and played games. the food was just oh my goodness I cannot. it was all too good.

2. the Queen's birthday

my Mama's birthday! if you saw my insta stories on that day, you'd remember that my mother and I carried out a plan. because Swensen's has an offer for those celebrating their birthday (you get a free ice-cream/discount), Mama told me to get my younger sister food first before meeting her there.

perks of living next to a mall. heh!

we ordered the food I was going to eat, and she left to go tutor (after passing my younger sister the food that I got her first).

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the ice cream, paid, and left for home.

afterwards, we went back to Ang Mo Kio because our tenants had promised us that they would treat Mama because it was her birthday. the food was so good and the portions were huge I kid you not. we had to pack most of what we ordered.

what was even cuter was how they got her a cake (her favourite flavour – which also happens to be mine) and played the happy birthday song over the speaker. so adorable.

3. Cousin's Jalan Raya

my older sister and I wanted to join our maternal cousins for their jalan raya, so I applied for leave (otherwise I'd be working from afternoon to evening). I got to wear the last of my set of clothes we purchased for Eid, and the two of us joined the remaining cousins who were still visiting.

we couldn't join them in the morning because my older sister still had class, so by the time we reached our cousin's house, there were only a few houses left.

it was really fun though! we went over to our aunt's house again, but this time my nieces and nephews joined us. her father (my cousin) suggested that she asked me for help for one of her art assignments. it was super adorable having to colour with her in the place I saw her grew up in.

memories of her as a tiny baby came back, and I reminisced how lovely our childhoods were.

...

throughout the entire month, I got to savour how everyone celebrated Eid (thank you social media). It was lovely to know that the people dear to me spent their time well, even if I wasn't able to join them. I received reminders from the ones who cared about me, and that was really heartwarming.

I got to spend time with my best friend who always looked out for me. I gladly accepted her invites to accompany her to Malaysia, and those trips were so refreshing.

I managed to finish my manuscripts, and I'm currently in the midst of making minor edits and drawing their accompanying illustrations. it took me a while, but relishing the joy that came with finishing a story really is something.

everything seems to be looking well so far, and Alhamdulillah for that.

still homesick for the hearts who have held me before,

Ready or not, here I...

...come Hijab!

Ah, the hijab. One of the common topics discussed among women today.

If you remember in one of my earlier posts dedicated to my good friend, I wrote a conversation we had about the hijab. She concluded my thoughts on why some muslim sisters don't wear the hijab because they "...aren't ready yet".

After attending the Syabab SG's Ladies' Night event, I learnt that the hijab is a process. Not just in clothing, but in modesty and behaviour as well. This is one of six pages of notes I managed to write:

my other notes have doodles on them (as usual – hahah!)
Donning the hijab is so much more than putting a cloth on your head to cover your hair. Your attitude and behaviour must change in accordance to the hijab.

"Beauty without modesty, is like a conversation without honesty."

To the many of my lovely muslim sisters are righteous and faithful in Islam, but have yet to start their journey of donning the hijab: why not?

Are you waiting to go to Hajj or Umrah?
Are you waiting for your mother or older sister to start wearing it?
Are  you waiting for your future spouse to guide you to Jannah together?

Or are you just contemplating...waiting for the right moment to wear it?

*smiles*

Like I've mentioned earlier, who guaranteed you tomorrow my dear sisters?

Stay modest,
Nurul xx

Forgiveness

What does it mean to forgive?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------❀

To quote one of my best friend's brilliant younger sister, Nabilah Bahrim:

"To accept the detriments caused upon you through the wrongs of beings, and hold no further prejudice against those beings on the basis of those detriments.

In light of that, I do wish to seek forgiveness from all whom I have ever known for try as I might, I am but a highly flawed human being, prone to error and in need of all the guidance I can get."

"To err is human and to forgive is divine"
We all make mistakes from time to time.

Forgiveness can be a hard process. However, in order to live a peaceful life, you need to be willing to forgive one another. And most importantly, you need to forgive yourself.

Forgive yourself on all your mistakes. Forgive yourself for being to harsh on yourself. Forgive yourself, for accidentally saying something that you had not intended on hurting someone else.

If you are muslim, and reading this, I highly recommend that you read this:
Forgiveness In Life

Stay forgiving,
Nurul xx

Religious class

Foreword: I wrote this Note on Facebook on 17 June 2011. I felt that it is appropriate to share it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------❀

So many thoughts running through my mind; I should write- or type rather, right here to channel them.
Religious class –

Yes, I go to TWO religious classes; Andalus and TeensAlive at MDM. Why? Because;
“your agama isn’t as strong as your two sisters”

the reaction I get from telling my friends this is usually;
“YOU?! Your agama NOT STRONG?!”

followed by,
my mum doesn’t even send me for religious classes – pffsht/
haha but my parents only send me to one madrasah

or something like that.

The thing is, I really truly love religious classes. They’re FUN! I mean, you get to learn about your religion, and you get to catch up with friends and story-telling.
*Note: I refer to Andalus as Andalus and TeensAlive at MDM as madrasah

I actually enjoy madrasah more than Andalus; I find it stress-relieving. Who wouldn’t? I get to sit/learn/pray in a the best environment; the mosque, and TeensAlive is IN ENGLISH. hahahaha. I love how there are intervals between classes to pray. And how the asatizah are super-friendly and approachable, and that we have awesome pamphlets distributed every lesson that grab my attention. (And I really really wanted to go to the forum! BUT I WAS FLYING TO THAILAND THAT DAY.) We also have Sports/Family day (which I missed :C ) And! My ex-primary schoolmates will be there too; like SYABIL. Hahahhaha. (Ohmigosh, I remember how – wait was it you? - who’d always start reading Al-Asr, as if the class would end! Tsk!) We have awesome projects (in English, yay!) like the video project. Although Darul Makmur is at Yishun, and that Al-Muttaqin is so much closer, I’m more comfortable learning at Darul Makmur since I’ve been studying there since I was...5! Yes! I attended the kindergarten. It's been 11 years♥; definitely my favourite masjid, since I pretty much grew up there.

But Andalus; I learn more...in depth. Its very enriching, and especially fun with the 3 girls to talk non-stop to. Hahaha! I chose to go to Admiralty’s Andalus centre, mainly because ZAHIDAH was going there (but you’re not in Saturday class anymore! Grr!); and also, I’d see my other primary school friends...like Afiqah! :> And yes, there are exams I get worked up about. But that makes me REVISE AND LEARN MORE! So more knowledge is in my head; about our beautiful religion. And I love Arabic. More than Malay; but what really ignited my passion for learning Bahasa Arab was because my little sister is attending Alsagoff, and she can speak and understand Arabic better than me! So malu, right? (She laughed at my Arabic Workbook. “Hahahaha! I learnt this in Primary One! -.-“) Hahaha. But my arabic handwriting is awesome and I love writing in arabic. *self-praise* hehehehh.

Attending madrasah is like tuition for Andalus. Really! Because reading the TeensAlive textbook is what I learnt in Andalus like, a year back. But it refreshes my memory! And I enjoy that.

I’m so thankful to my mother who bothered to send me for these classes. I feel very privileged.

But; I’m in a dilemma.

This year, is TeensAlive’s last year for me. And my mum wants me to continue with Andalus...or Pergas. No, its not the fact that I have to continue is a dilemma; its that its very hard to choose. There’s YouthAlive, Andalus and Pergas. I don’t want to leave MDM; its like my second home. But Pergas, I think you need the MUIS version of PSLE certificate; I DIDN’T TAKE IT. Y’KNOW WHY?

Because my first ustaz thought that my agama was strong enough since I got 4th in class for my first year in Andalus. And I last minute revise some more. Never mind Rafiq, I WILL GET FIRST. JUST YOU WAIT.

But in Pergas you get to wear your own clothes! And its like a lecture format! I like it, based on all the stories that kakak told me. If I go to Pergas, I’ll be leaving my childhood friends. :X ugh!

Anyway;
dear Asatizah,
thank you for all your patience and lessons. yes, its not teacher’s day, but I don’t think I’ve thanked you! I know I come late (sorry. I live at ang mo kio, and by right, I should be the one getting ready earlier, right? I will improve, I promise!) for lessons, but I am ever so willing to attend your lessons. And sorry if I cry in class. The lessons and hadith that you teach touch and reach my heart, and its like direct advice to current issues that I face/was facing that time. And for my asatizah at MDM; I’m sorry that I don’t attend class/‘tompang’ class at times; I’m busy, but I should make time for learning more about my religion, yes? (But there always be that debate of “Mehh, I already went for Andalus), and also, sorry for not passing in forms on time.

thank you for your effort and PATIENCE. like, ustazah su’aidah; told me she couldn’t tahan the guys in our class- but she still taught us anyway(:

hmmm, anyway WHEN IS MY PRESENTATION FOR MADRASAH? I want to present! :D

Allhamdulliah; thank you Allah, for blessing me with education and wonderful teachers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------❀
Dear Nurulhuda from 2011,
You are such a blessed girl. Continue to spread the light of Islam, and in 2 years, you would have finished your IB, graduated from SOTA, did well for your 'o-level religious certificate', and gotten closer to so many beautiful people. Stay strong, Nurulhuda. You are very, very loved.

Stay inspired,
Nurul (in the present) xx

ps: for those of you not tagged/mentioned – I hope you know that this is also dedicated for you.
